Interesting things about Hospital Cave Cat Ba Island

The history of the name of Hospital Cave

Hospital Cave was originally known as Hung Son Cave, named after a general from the Tran dynasty who participated in the Battle of Bach Dang River and discovered the cave. It was only during the years 1963 – 1965, when the United States invaded northern Vietnam, that this limestone cave was renovated and used as a field hospital.

The cave was turned into a hospital for wounded soldiers, offering refuge from bombings for local residents and inhabitants of nearby Bach Long Vy Island, with a capacity of approximately 100 patients. Hospital Cave truly stands as a masterpiece of wartime ingenuity, as the entire structure was built inside the mountain, providing an ideal makeshift hospital for recuperation.

The one-of-a-kind structure of Hospital Cave

The Hospital Cave on Cat Ba Island boasts a truly remarkable and one-of-a-kind structure that showcases the ingenuity of its wartime construction. Carved deep into the heart of the mountain, the cave’s structure is a testament to human adaptability and resilience in the face of adversity.

The cave features a multi-level layout, with three floors spanning over 2,000 square meters of space. Its design incorporates natural rock formations seamlessly into its architecture, creating a blend of rugged natural beauty and functional human intervention.

One striking feature of the cave is its robust construction using reinforced concrete, which provides durability and stability to the entire structure. The first floor houses 14 rooms, constructed with sturdy concrete walls and floors, serving as treatment and recovery areas for patients.

Moving deeper into the cave, visitors will encounter additional rooms and facilities spread across the second and third floors. These include reception areas, physical examination rooms, film screening rooms, officer quarters, and guard rooms, among others.

The entrance to Hospital Cave is protected by a secure iron gate designed to withstand potential attacks, resembling a sturdy shield against external threats.
